The decklist shown here is Dylan Donegan's 2nd place Burn deck from SCG Dallas. There were 3 copies in the top 8 and 4 copies in the top 16 of the first event after the bannings and it's continued to put up even more results since then. Burn has always been a tier one archetype, but it's better positioned now than it has been for a long time. BurnĮarlier this month was the first Star City Games Modern Open since the recent changes and Burn put up a great showing. We have a lot of information and card evaluation to go through here, so let's get started! Oh yeah, there's also going to be some free stuff that you can win at the end of this article! Just in case you needed a little more of an incentive to keep reading. Today I'll be discussing 8 decks that I think are well positioned in this brand new Modern meta. Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis and Faithless Looting are now gone and a 2 mana 1/2 ( Stoneforge Mystic) was deemed no longer too strong for Modern. Hello everyone! Since the last time I wrote an article, we've seen some huge changes to the Modern format.

He looked pretty comfortable as he watched the film, Lazic-Kirk said. The lights were turned down low and he had three seats to himself. 7/30/2023 0 Comments Nootka trail vancouver islandA short while after we saw our pilot coming back with another plane full of hikers, but appeared to take a sharp turn back to Gold River after hitting the fog bank. We carried on our way and watched as a wall of fog slowly drifted in from the open ocean. We saw a large group of other hikers packing up here and we wondered which direction they were headed. However, it wasn't long until we popped out the other side of the forest onto Third Beach. The start of the trail was pretty rough: mud pits, logs, and roots to navigate. That was it, we were left to find our way to Friendly Cove. He tossed out our bags and taxied back across the lagoon without us. We had heard mention of a wet exit from the aircraft and were pleased to find that our pilot was able to run the floats of the plane slightly onto shore so that we could hop onto dry land. We touched down in Louie Lagoon after what seemed to be a very short flight. Seeing it from the air was really unique. I was so excited to see the coastline I had travelled as a kid on the Uchuck. We took the first flight out of Gold River at 0800. She confessed to packing four tall can beers as a luxury item for the trip. We weighed our bags before the flight, with Darryl taking the cake for heaviest hiking bag. We arrived at the Nootka Air office eager to hit the trail on what appeared to be a magnificent sunny day. Then we would take the Uchuck back from the end of the trail in Friendly Cove to Gold River. Darryl, Lauren, and I decided that we would drive to Gold River and fly to the start of the trail in Louie Lagoon, chartering a float plane from Nootka Air. Getting to the trail requires a bit of planning, since it is remote and off the coast of Vancouver Island. The Nootka trail runs 37kms along the west coast of Nootka Island. They would speak of finding Japanese glass floats, camping on remote sandy beaches, and taking in breathtaking sunsets. Here I met many hikers coming off of the Nootka Trail. As a kid I would accompany my family and enjoy the pleasures of weekly trips to Friendly Cove (Yuquot). The Uchuck is an old mine sweeper that has been converted to take supplies and tourists around the Nootka Sound. While growing up in Gold River both my mom and Grandma worked on the Uchuck III. Hiking the Nootka trail has been a dream of mine ever since I was young. 7/30/2023 0 Comments Harmony one crypto buyHarmony’s website defines it as a “sharding protocol with a trustless Ethereum bridge”. A sharding protocol is a database partitioning technique used by blockchain companies to upscale and conduct more transactions a second. The sharding process, introduced by the developers, significantly cuts down the time needed to validate a transaction. Unlike other sharding-based blockchains that use a proof-of-work ( PoW) consensus mechanism to choose validators, Harmony deploys an Effective Proof-of-Stake (EPoS) protocol, which helps to reduce centralisation and increase transaction speeds.įocusing on validation and processing speed, Harmony strives to make block creation faster to support scalability. Pangaea gathers validators from over 100 countries. In line with thousands of Ethereum and Bitcoin nodes, 800 Harmony nodes are run by the community. This node community is referred to as Pangaea. Harmony's mission is to create an open network of nodes, governed and operated by a large community. The production mainnet supports 4 shards of 1,000 nodes, which produce blocks in two seconds. Harmony is a layer-2 protocol built on ethereum that seeks to help dApps scale up by offering faster and cheaper settlements. Most people won’t notice this, but if your app suddenly calls for a high temperature of 120☏ in Denver, it could very well be due to this kind of flawed assumption! Weather Prediction Center Meteorologist, Andrew Orrison, uses weather model data. For example, NOAA’s flagship weather model, the GFS (Global Forecast System), which powers most modern weather apps, has recently been having trouble with an assumption about how heat and moisture are distributed through the lowermost layer of the atmosphere during very hot days in semiarid climates. However, the assumptions usually have flaws, leading to inaccurate forecasts. Most of these assumptions are accurate most of the time, which is why weather apps generally won’t lead you too far astray. Different models (and apps) make slightly different assumptions, leading to drastically different forecasts. For a more detailed look at the probability of precipitation, how it’s calculated, and some common misconceptions, check out our article on the percentage of rain meaning.Īnother big reason has to do with how the weather models make assumptions about what the weather now might mean for the weather later. Usually, these percentages are computed for the whole box, even though the real threat might be more concentrated on a mountaintop, for instance. One way weather apps often deal with this problem, especially for precipitation, is by giving you a percentage chance of rain or snow. The size of these boxes, and the fact that all weather apps rely on some version of them, is a big reason you might not see a perfect forecast from your app.ĭespite the wildly varying topography in the photo above, weather models would treat most of this area as a single box, predicting average conditions that may not represent either the mountain base or summit. The same holds true for areas of mountainous terrain. Similarly, if your box includes 25 square miles of land and 5 square miles of ocean, the average temperature will look more like the inland heat than the cool sea breeze you may feel on the beach. Often, in reality, that’s not the case! A small summer thunderstorm over Atlanta might only be a mile wide, not occupying a whole box and completely flying “under the radar” from the weather app’s perspective. This is important because the model treats everything within those boxes equally. Depending on the model, these boxes are between two and six miles on each side. How do weather apps give you a forecast anyway? They rely on computer models of the atmosphere that take information about what the weather is doing now and use it to predict what might happen in the future.īecause computers are only so big, weather models have to split the world into little boxes to get a handle on the problem. How Do Weather Apps Work, and Why Are They Sometimes Wrong? At some point, those little disturbances will overwhelm whatever forecast signal we were relying on. Imagine trying to track down every butterfly and all the disruptions to the air that you might create in the process. We can’t possibly account for every tiny disturbance. A tiny disturbance now can have huge and unexpected consequences later, meaning that after even just ten days, weather forecasts become almost useless. If you’ve heard some version of the saying “a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil and causes a tornado to touch down in Texas,” that’s the idea behind chaos theory. Why does this happen? The answer lies in an idea central to meteorology-chaos theory. A five-day and seven-day forecast is fairly accurate, but they are less reliable beyond that range. By ten days, forecasts are only accurate approximately 50% of the time. The NOAA says that, on average, a five-day forecast is correct about 90% of the time, while a seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather 80% of the time. While everyone can think of that time or two (or maybe more) that a meteorologist got things super wrong, the reality is that in 2023 weather forecasts are, on average, extremely good. They built a model of an iceberg in their laboratory. Icebergs don’t occur naturally in Chicago, so Burton and his colleagues had to find a clever way to study the ‘bergs behavior there. The iceberg will twist in the water until it too finds a stable position, with most of its bulk at the bottom. Now imagine that an unstable iceberg is like a rubber ducky that weighs seven times as much as New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Instead, the rest of its body falls into the water, too, and the upright ducky floats to the surface. No matter how many times you try, the ducky doesn’t stay put. To understand how a glacier flips, imagine trying to float a rubber ducky on its head. In each of these cases, gravity causes an object to shift from instability to stability. A person swishing down a waterslide is unstable and doesn’t stop moving until she reaches the bottom. A balloon submerged in a pool of water is unstable and quickly floats to the surface. A dropped ball is unstable and falls toward the ground once it stops moving, it becomes stable. When an iceberg forms and plunges into the water, the block of ice may be unstable, or prone to move. The force of gravity makes an iceberg flip. water_tank_and_scientistsĪ model iceberg flips over and stirs the water in a water tank, allowing scientists to study what happens when icebergs turn over. If an iceberg flips close enough to the glacier or some other solid surface, it may shake the ground hard enough to be detected as an earthquake. “Large icebergs break off glaciers and then they flip,” says Burton. That’s when icebergs are most likely to capsize. An iceberg forms when part of the ice shelf cracks and breaks off. Where the edge of the glacier floats on water, it forms an ice shelf. In especially cold areas, like Greenland or Antarctica, glaciers may flow over the land and into the ocean. Burton and his colleagues published their results in the January 20 issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research. Such a frozen flip may even trigger an earthquake. He says an iceberg takes about three or four minutes to flip, and afterward it may send out large waves called tsunamis. “It’s easily as much energy as an atomic bomb,” says physicist Justin Burton, who designed and carried out the experiments. In recent experiments at the University of Chicago, scientists have calculated that an overturning iceberg may release as much energy as some of the most destructive events on the planet. When one of these blocks of ice flips over, it causes a great splash. Their peaks may soar hundreds of feet above the surface and large ones cover as much area as major cities. Overall he's a very interesting guy, I recommend digging a bit into his youtube channel and the documentaries made about his expeditions.Icebergs look like towering, frozen mountains that drift through water. Here's the full movie of his "Arktos" expedition Here's a shorter commented (by him) version (part 1). Here's the full movie of his expedition around the globe at latitude 0°. He acknowledged it was a very stupid idea and doesn't encourage anyone to do that kind of stunt. Here's a video where he talks about the iceberg incident. It's mainly in french but I believe there are English subtitles. The Pole2Pole expedition ended in December 2019 following the completion of Mike's Arctic crossing which brought him back to Europe, his starting point over three years after leaving the Yacht Club of Monaco in May 2016 Equipped with his exploration sailing vessel, Pangaea, Mike circumnavigated the globe from Africa to Antarctica, Oceania, Asia, the Arctic, and back to Europe. On, Mike left from his point of departure, The Yacht Club of Monaco. Mike left North Cape in Norway and went through Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Bering Strait and Russian Siberia before he reached North Cape.Īnd finally, his latest expedition "Pole2Pole", a two-year circumnavigation of the globe via the South and North Poles. It was a solitary voyage of two years and three months without motorised transport (boat, kayak, ski kite and on foot) on a 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi) odyssey. He ALSO went around the world on the Arctic Circle solo in an expedition dubbed "Arktos". He also set off on an 18-month voyage to circle the equator on foot and by sailing, this was the first solo circumnavigation of the world around the Equator – unaided and with no engine-driven support. He crossed the South America continent solo by foot, it took him 6 months. He was the first man to travel without a dog or motorised transport to the North Pole during winter, in permanent darkness. ( Everything that follows are extracts from his Wikipedia page) Yes he's the one on the right, very famous explorer. |
